Q: What do I need from Telkom to send SMS's
A:
To send SMS's over a Telkom Line, you need to have Caller Line ID enabled on your line. You can request this from Telkom by phoning 10219 and asking for the IdentiCall Service to be activated.When this service is activated you can send your first SMS. The SMS service will be automatically enabled and a Welcome SMS will be sent to you.

Q: How does the Telkom SMS system work
A:
This service allows you to send and receive SMS's over your normal telephone line. The Telkom Easy SMS modem contacts the SMS server deployed by Telkom to send SMS's. SMS's can be sent to other Telkom lines as well as to cell phones. It is also possible to receive SMS's sent by a cell phone on the cellular network or fixed line SMS unit . In this case the SMS server will ring your line to deliver the SMS. The SMS modem will automatically detect that the call is from the SMS server, answer the call and retrieve the SMS.

Q: When I send an SMS, I get a voice SMS back from Telkom
A:
Check first that the Telkom IdentiCall service is enabled for your line. If it is then call Telkom on 10219 to ask them to enable the SMS service for you. If you have not enabled the identicall service, call Telkom on 10219 to request activation.

Q: I cannot send SMS's to international destinations
A:
Currently the Telkom SMS server does not provide this service. SMS's can only be sent to numbers within South Africa

Q: I get the error message "Modem not found. Please reconfigure" when I run the application
A:
Either your modem is not connected to the PC via the USB or the USB drivers are not installed correctly. Follow the checklist below to diagnose the problem.

  • The drivers have been installed by running for the Windows taskbar Start->Programs->Telkom SMS->Telkom SMS Driver Installation . If you have not done this and your modem is connected to the PC unplug it before installing the drivers. When the installation form is displayed click on the Install button and close the form after the "Installation Successful" message is displayed.
  • Modem is connected to the PC? If not connect now.
  • Follow the installation instructions (provide link to pdf) to install the drivers.
  • To check if the drivers are installed correctly, you can check them using the Windows Control Panel->System->Device Manager . Refer to the Installation Guide to check the two drivers under Ports and Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  • If the drivers are there, run the Telkom Easy SMS application. If the error message is not displayed communications to the SMS modem should be working. A quick check is to click on the Get button on the Easy SMS form and see if the green comms indicators (on the bottom right of the form) flash momentarily to red.

Q: I have tried everything and I still cannot get the application to see the modem.
A: The best thing is to:

  • Shutdown the Easy SMS application and uninstall the Modem Drivers using the Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs . Remove the following driver program: Telkom SMS Modem .
  • Disconnect the modem from the PC and restart your PC.
  • Do not connect the modem yet.
  • Install the drivers using Windows taskbar Start->Programs->Telkom SMS->Telkom SMS Driver Installation . When the installation form is displayed click on the Install button and close the form after the "Installation Successful" message is displayed.
  • Plug in the modem to the PC using the USB cable supplied.
  • Follow the Installation guide (link as above) to complete the installation.

Q: Can I receive SMS's as well as sending them?
A: Yes. This is one of the advantages of this system as it allows both sending and receiving SMS's all controlled locally from your home or office.

Q: When I send an SMS I get a "System Message - Rejected by Server" in my Inbox
A: This could be due to a few reasons:

  • Check to see if the telephone line is connected to the modem.
  • You have not specified the full number with area code as the recipient number. This is required by the SMS system, even for local numbers (ie: you cannot use 7881448. This should be 0117881448)
  • The server number is not configured correctly. Check these by clicking on the Config button on the Easy SMS taskbar and selecting System. Check the following before trying to send the SMS again:

Service Centre (Outgoing) must be 1091969
Service Centre (Incoming) must be 0881091969
Mailbox should be 0

Q: Can I use the Telkom Easy SMS behind a PABX
A: Yes. Note however that because the SMS system uses the Caller Line ID sent during ring, that you most likely will not be able to receive SMS's. If you do put the SMS modem behind a PABX, be sure to specify the PABX digit (for accessing an outside line) by clicking on the Config button on the Easy SMS taskbar and selecting System to display the system configuration form.
